JANUARY IS NATIONAL MENTORING MONTH!!!

Here's why Jackie Wynn, Volunteer Coordinator, feels you should become a mentor for WCCSB:

As a Child Mentor, a volunteer is matched with a child aged 6 - 17 who desperately needs individualized attention.  If so desired, volunteers may welcome the child into their home to interact with their family life.  Time and again, children's caseworkers comment that the volunteer/child match boosts a child's self-esteem and assists in improving socialization skills and behavior because of a mentor's positive influence, commitment, and attention.

When asked "what fun things do you and your mentor do?", some of the children's responses have included:

bullet

 Eating out

Watching or going to the movies

When asked "what makes your mentor special", some of the children have said:

bullet

She doesn't treat me wrong or call me names

 She cares

He is just plain out fun!!!

Consider for a moment your own childhood......did you have the fortune of having a mentor or someone interested in you?  Did you have someone to listen to you? Did you have someone to offer guidance?....advice?....and, when needed, did you have someone to offer you their brutally honest opinions?  I'll go out on a limb here and bet that you had someone that influenced you in your childhood.  Now, imagine your life without that person.  Where would you be today had you not had a mentor??

Please contact us today to become a mentor!!!!
